Is there an open-source Tivo easy-to-hack media server?

In series 2 and later versions of Tivos, there is the option "Music on [computername]" under "Music, Photos and Showcases", which allows you to play music hosted on any other machine. It seems that this option appears for every computer on the LAN with a compatible server. For example, a Windows Tivo Desktop computer may appear if it is configured correctly. My NAS also has support for this. However, none of these servers are configured as desired. (And the only box for Windows in our house is a laptop, so you really can't rely on a server because it has slept most of the time.)

Is there an open-source Tivo easy-to-hack media server (or library for creating it)? I need something that can work on Linux, and I would prefer something written in Python or Java.

Basically, I take care of being able to serve music (mp3 files), but the support for "Photos on [computername]" will be a nice bonus.

I never did, but there was a package called pyTiVo that claims to be used for videos, music and photos. (Here 's a blog post about how someone installed it on an old version of Ubuntu.)

Take a look at the HME / VLC Video Streamer . This is a cross-platform Python and GPL 2.1 license. Pretty easy to set up.
