Apache error log - unknown filter was not added: includes

I get multiple instances of the following error in my Mac OS X Apache error_log:

[Thu Jun 25 17:11:56.789373 2015] [core:error] [pid 277] [client 127.0.0.1:58739] AH00082: an unknown filter was not added: includes

I searched, but could not find the reason for this. Is there a way to get more details on what causes this?

If you have:

 AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml

included in the configuration, as a rule, when you have mods-enabled/mime.conf , and did not mods-enabled/mime.conf on the server including the module ( modules/mod_include.so ), then any request for any file with the extension .shtml (regardless of whether there is it or not, and even if the Includes option is not enabled) will result in this error message.

If you are not using the server side, it is better not to enable the module, as there is a small potential security risk (although you still need to enable the Includes parameter for it to work). If you want this (harmless) error to disappear, you can comment on this AddOutputFilter line above.

I am having problems with the settings of Yosemite and apache2, but historically this error means that you need to (1) allow overrides in httpd.conf and possibly (2) in your .htaccess, you say Options + Includes:

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_include.html

Actually, what most likely happened:

  • You have SetOutputFilter DEFLATE in your configuration
  • You did not mod_deflate module

In my particular case, I just had to uncomment this line:

 LoadModule deflate_module libexec/apache2/mod_deflate.so

and then everything was fine.

If you look at this thread, it seems that there are many ways that can cause this error. In my case, mod_include was not included, and in the virtual host directive I had:

 Options Includes

Removing this directive or enabling a module (a2enmod include) has been fixed.
