Schema.org WebSite vs WebPage

I read the Google documentation on how to do a search box for sitelinks . In this example, they use

itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/WebSite"

to implement sub-properties of type potentialAction , etc.

However, after reading the documentation for the CreativeWork schema, it seems to me that WebSite inferior to WebPage .

  • They inherit the same properties from CreativeWork
  • WebPage has its own properties, and WebSite does not

Is there a scenario in which WebSite should be used / preferred?

WebSite represents a website, WebPage represents a web page (for example, the difference between Blog and BlogPosting ).

Additional properties from WebPage (e.g. breadcrumb and mainContentOfPage ) will not necessarily make sense for WebSite .

The search box for links in Google’s search engines uses WebSite because the search usually applies to the entire site, not just one page.
