.gitignore blank in Windows Explorer

Why is my .gitignore file empty in Windows (7) Explorer?

Please note that both the .htaccess file and the .git folder are displayed as expected.

This is because Windows believes that .gitignore is a file extension and hides the extension. And when before . there is nothing empty.
