DMS recommendation for a large-scale enterprise

Two days have passed and I am looking to choose the right open source DMS for a large enterprise. Among all open source document management systems written in Java, Nuexo , LogicalDoc, and Alfresco seem to have a good reputation. However, I could not find a fair comparison between them, and since I have no experience in this context, it is so difficult to choose among them. So far, I have installed Nuxeo and LogicalDoc and tested some of their functionality. Both seem to have a lot in common. I have no idea about Alfresco , but it made me somehow disappointed because it seems that its community does not contain most of the useful features ( http://www.alfresco.com/products/community ).

Finally, there are some important criteria that I must consider in all of them:

  • Easy setup
  • Change language and theme
  • Interface support for third-party applications
  • Developer's guide (documentation)

I would be grateful if you share your experience in this context.

Nuxeo can meet your needs:

  • It is based on OSGI, so you can configure it using XML and / or Java (see Nuxeo Explorer for an exhaustive list of extension scores, contributions, ...). Nuxeo Studio is available if you decide to sign up for Nuxeo Online Services, this is not necessary, but speeds up the setup of Nuxeo through the user interface.
  • It fully supports i18n customization and themes. This is part of the OSGI model.
  • Nuxeo already provides add-ons for communicating with some third-party applications through standard protocols. But, depending on what you need, you can create a custom one containing web services, for example, or any other custom communication protocol.
  • Documentation is available here . Nuxeo is completely open source, you can find sources on GitHub.

Nuxeo platform is free, there are no restrictions on which OS or database is supported or not supported. Subscribing to Nuxeo Online Services gives you access to Nuxeo Studio, Nuxeo Marketplace, Nuxeo Cloud, and Nuxeo Support. You may want to subscribe based on your needs.

The Alfresco community can address all the criteria you specify because

Obviously, in a production, enterprise application, you must go for an Enterprise Edition license. Alfresco is completely open, but this does not mean that it is free.

You can find a very good comparison between the community and the corporate version in this SO post
