Is S-PLUS dead?

I know this is not really a programming issue, but I don't know where else to ask ...

S-PLUS was acquired by TIBCO several years ago. And this, it would seem, was included in the Spotfire product. However, I installed the demo version of Spotfire and can’t find anything that indicates that S-PLUS is no longer part of this.

So my question is: is S-PLUS dead? And is there any way to install the previous version? I know that R completely turned upside down, but I would be curious to just try if it is available somewhere.

Not sure how relevant the question is, but here are my $ 0.02:

  • Yes, R won.

  • TIBCO still has a Spotfire product that mentions S-Plus (pdf found through a simple Google search).

  • IIRC, years ago TIBCO acquired a commercial S license, but it turned out that no one wanted the S-Plus unless it was fully compatible with R.

  • TIBCO learned this lesson and built a completely new R-compatible engine, which they call TERR ; the jury still does not know whether it will ever be obtained to a large extent.

After all, it's pretty hard to beat a well-preserved and written open source product --- and R is one of the best Open Source examples done right.
