Emacs tramp hangs with "Tramp: found remote shell prompt"

I am trying for the first time to access deleted files via tramp from Emacs on Windows. I am trying to open a remote directory through Cx Cf /plink: user@host :/ . However, when Emacs hits the “Tramp: find remote shell prompt” in the minibuffer, it freezes. And not only the minibuffer is hanging, but all Emacs are hanging, so I have to kill it through the task manager. Unfortunately, this means that I do not see any debugging information for tramp, because it is output to the Emacs buffer. How can I debug this?

I am running Windows 8.1, Emacs 24.3 and plink 0.63.

I came across a very similar situation with tramp ssh, and I cannot figure out what your specific problem is, but only that you can get the full trace:

(setq tramp-verbose 10)

Then try connecting again and after it freezes, Cg and check for the presence of a buffer:

*debug tramp/plink USER@IP *

The verbosity of level 10 can be too overwhelming - you can experiment with lower levels (lower numbers) to see if it shows what might be the problem. Check docstring for tramp-verbose .

Good luck
