On an iPad in a calendar application, clicking the “+” button in the upper right corner is a view that overlays over the current view, such as spawning a UIActionSheet from a UIBarButtonItem. However, this view explicitly contains the UINavigationController, something that the UIActionSheet cannot do initially.

I bet this is not a UIActionSheet , but a UIPopoverController that can embed a UINavigationController .
