I am trying to display items in a list from JSON ::

  • I am trying to populate data from JSON to listView, some ambiguity when populating MainActivity.java
  • which collection to use for this function?
  • Any ideas. It looks simple, but for a novice like me, giving it a lot of struggle to find out.

Create a class, say Student, to hold a record, create an array of Student from JSON, and then use this with an ArrayAdapter to populate the ListView.

Using ArrayList would be better for you. See the following snippet,

Announce the following from above,

 public static ArrayList<String> FriendName = new ArrayList<String>(); 

And after inside the try block after fetching Name

 FriendName .add(Name); 

And you can easily get values โ€‹โ€‹from arraylist through the index value, e.g.

 String data=FriendName.get(0);

I would use the GSON library for its simplicity. In this case, you will have the following:

POJO student class for data mapping

 public class Student private int id; private String name; private String city; private String Gender; private int age; private String birthdate; //getters and setters } 

To analyze the data just do

 Student[] students; Type token = new TypeToken<Student[]>() {}.getType(); Gson gson = new Gson(); students = gson.fromJson(jsonString, token); 

And from here you just add data to the adapter and what it is.
