What is the difference between shared folder and synchronized folder in Vagrant?

Looking through the Vagrant tutorials, I saw two options for sharing folders between host computers and guest computers - shared folders and synchronized folders. What is the difference between the two?

Or, is the folder synchronized with the new name for the shared folder in Vagrant 2?

Shared Folders more specific to VirtualBox ( vboxsf ) and has known performance issues as the number of files grows.

Vagrant v2 (for vagrant 1.1.x and 1.2.x) docs use the more generic name Synced Folder, which includes the default vboxsf and NFS.

In addition to vboxsf and NFS, sshfs also worth a look if Linux is running on your host.

As you may have guessed, a synchronized folder is a new, more general name for a function that no longer depends only on VirtualBox from Vagrant 1.1.
