Just enter a Unicode character that will sort after Z in most cases?

As you probably know, most characters are sorted before the alphabetical letters.

I am looking for one character that is easy to type from the keyboard, which will sort after "z" in most implementations.

If it is also an ASCII character, so much the better :)

Any ideas?

On a Mac, these are the only characters that I can type using the American keyboard (with shift modifiers and without modifications), which are sorted below Z and z:

  • Ω (option + z)
  • π (option + p)
  • μ (option + m)
  •  (shift + option + k)

It seems that omega and then pi are the best options for cross-platform compatibility.

A Tilde '~' is ASCII code 126.

This happens after all standard English usage characters and therefore will sort the “Z” of any case.

It will not sort other special characters, however the ASCII or Unicode sequence is not enough to cover international varieties in any context.

On Windows, none of these options work because they are all sorted to A

The solution I chose is the Arabic character:

Folder This folder goes after z in Windows

A source

Xi " Ξ " works well!

On a Mac: Ctrl + Cmd + Space, then type “XI”.

It is similar to sorting LC_ALL=C by ascii, so {|}~ and DEL will appear after z.

 % echo $'a\nA\n1\ n@ \n~' | LC_ALL=C sort 1 @ A a ~

This seems to be the default when LC_ALL is not set to sort mac / bsd, but should be explicitly set to sort gnu.

I was late for the party, but I tore my hair out to find the character who was sorted last, who would also not correct my OCD. Finally found this Arabic character "ﻩ" after z. Put one on each side of the folder name like this ...
ﻩ Chances and Ends ﻩ
... looks pretty nice to me, so maybe this will work for all of you!

The answers given here that helped me:

  • Ξ _Greek capital letter XI (for answer tonystar);
  • π _Greek lowercase letter PI (for the answer DaveC);
  • Ω _Greek capital letter OMEGA (for the answer DaveC);
  • µ _ international symbol for micrometer, previously and micron AKA (for DaveC answer);
  • ٴ _ Arabic letter ٴ (unidentified) (for a degenerate answer);
  • Isolated _Arabic letter HEH, isolated form (for Bytee answer);

Notes:

  • using macOS 10.14.2.
  • tilde ~ is always displayed before numbers in ascending order.

In a macOS Numbers application (table), sorting (ascending) is as follows:

  • 0
  • nine
  • Z
  • μ
  • Ξ
  • π
  • Ω
  • ٴ
  • ه

It may be worth mentioning that this last ﻩ Arabic letter from HEH is difficult to edit in Numbers.

On macOS Finder, sorting (ascending) is displayed as follows:

  • ٴ (displayed as a narrow "empty" space at the beginning of the file name)
  • 0
  • nine
  • Z
  • μ
  • Ξ
  • π
  • Ω
  • ﻩ (displayed at the end of the file name on the display, at the beginning during editing)
