The title pretty much sums it up. I have a home-made processor with my assembler language called scratchy, which I would like to write code for more efficient use, but I think that SHOULD be a smart place to start.
Like LLVM , as suggested in a comment from @ SK-logic, you can look at the portable C ( pcc ) compiler , which might be easier to write a backend for.
