Getting rid of the Metro interface

The company I work for primarily runs a computer running Windows XP. These machines are getting old and need replacing. I wanted to wait until Windows 8 was released, as it is right around the corner. So, I downloaded Windows 8 for testing and found out the problems that I will have with my users, programs, goup policies, etc.

After installation, I noticed that everything changed, and I got a little lost for a while. In my opinion, the Metro interface sucks and is definitely going to rip off my users. If it’s not convenient for them, they often listen to me. Not to mention that this will lead to numerous changes in our group policy.

In general, I think it may take a long time to support. So I was wondering if there is a way to disable the Metro interface and show the traditional start button on the desktop. I would like to do it without hacking, if at all possible.

Unable to disable Metro and replace the Start screen with the Start button. The Start screen will be the way you are currently selecting programs.

You can launch applications using the regular desktop and taskbar. You can get to the desktop by clicking on the Desktop tile on the Start screen or using the Windows + key on the keyboard. There is no start button for the new Win8 taskbar, and pressing the Windows key on the keyboard will open the Start screen.

edit : Windows 8.1 has since added a nice start button to the taskbar.

If your users will primarily use email and a web browser for their applications, then the Metro user interface, which requires critical training, may be the best experience for your users. If your users can take advantage of a more mobile, sensory experience, then Metro could again be better. If you have many powerful users who need tools such as Visual Studio or Photoshop, they are going to spend a lot of time on a traditional desktop, as these applications do not make sense with the Metro user interface.

Despite the fact that I could not get around the launch screen (Metro), before I can get to the desktop, I would recommend you take a look at ClassicShell . This is an OpenSource project that gives you an initial menu and a start button. Again, after logging in, you will still see the initial screen and it seems that you will not be able to get rid of this, as was possible in the beta version with RPEnabled REG_DWORD .

In addition, you can get rid of the lock screen (before the login prompt) by changing the policy. Start gpedit.msc with a boost, then go to Computer Configuration Administrative Templates Control Panel Personalization , and in the left pane, double-click the Do not display the lock screen option and set it to Enabled .

In a nutshell, I will go along with Kate's advice on sticking to Windows 7. Too many desktop users have expressed dissatisfaction with the usability (or rather its lack) of Windows 8, so there is little chance that Microsoft will be forced to take action and re-enable some traditional elements. Of course, I will not rely too much on my hopes ...
