Google Play - link to link to an unpublished application?

Is it possible to have a download link for an unpublished app on Google Play? I want to send it to several people before publishing.

I know that I can just send the APK, but I would like it to be delivered first.

Yes, you can download applications from a URL directly (for example, the Amazon app store is distributed in this way), the only caveat is that your phone must be configured to accept application apps without an application (Google Play).

Google Play now allows you to publish beta and alpha versions of your mobile application.

This includes the creation of a Google or Google+ group, as well as an invitation to a tester. They can then use the https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.example.packagename form link to select a beta version.

They will then be available for beta / alpha APK download for normal download via Google Play.
