Matplotlib: open a closed shape?

Is it possible to reopen a closed shape (i.e. user X'd) in matplotlib? The following code shows a naive approach:

I am trying to create a figure with widgets in it, so a workaround is available (just enter a new picture), but I would like to know if the figure instance is completely useless after closing.

Yes, closing the shape completely removes it.
