When should you use HTML5 Microdata for SEO?

So, I studied this HTML 5 Microdata, but I'm not sure when or when to use it. I know that if you use a rating and you are looking for a website, it will pull up things like video ratings and article ratings, etc. But for Microdata, such as People or Places, is it so useful that I have to start implementing it on all my sites - large and small? How much effect will this have on my SEO if I start using Microdata in everything?

Perhaps something like http://schema.org/ as a standard dictionary. I think this is what Google suggests using. Here is a link to dev microdata http://dev.w3.org/html5/md/ , which will be useful if you are not familiar with microdata

Following this Schema.org - Why are you standing if you are not using it ... in an article about SEOMoz, I should say that this issue does not only concern microdata positions and Google. I think this needs to be understood much more broadly:

Some advantages:

  • Implementing microdata on a website Increases the CHANCE value for Rich Snippets appear next to your site in Google search results. You cannot say "microdata = rich snippets", but you also cannot say "no microdata = no rich snippets" :)
  • The presence of rich fragments increases the user's attention to this single search result, and this can lead to more clicks => visitors to your page.

Some cons:

  • Some rich snippets that may result from the use of microdata may allow users to find the information they are looking for directly in the search results without actually reaching your page. eg. if a user searches for a phone number and sees it in an expanded fragment, he does not need to click and visit your page.

You must decide for yourself whether you can accept this risk. From your own experience (and in this article), this risk is quite small, and if possible, you should implement microdata. Of course, “if you can” actually means: “if you can, and you don’t need to rebuild the whole site” :) If you have more serious things to do on your site, you should put them in the front line. Today it is only “nice to have”, and not “necessary.”

And only for the end - I know that my answer is not just yes or no answer, but because the question is not in this question. However, I hope this helps you make your own decision.

My answer will be "Always."

This is the new standard for categorizing all forms of information on the Internet.

Raven tools (no binding) have a schema.org microdata generator that should start from a good place:

http://schema-creator.org/product.php

They have a couple of diagram templates on this page (look in the left column).
