Camera Calibration - Zhang vs Gold Standard

What are the benefits of using the Gold Standard algorithm described in Multiple View Geometry (Hartley and Zisserman) relative to using another popular algorithm described by Zhang in Flexible New for camera calibration? I understand the main difference between the two algorithms, but I donโ€™t know which one is better and why?

The Gold Standard (or DLT) algorithm requires a non-coplanar target, most likely consisting of orthogonal planes.

Zhang requires several types of planar target. Itโ€™s easier to create physically (maybe it's just a printed chessboard mounted on a flat surface).
