I had a discussion with a colleague on this topic. He thought a new Gmail look was built with GWT. I can't seem to find a definitive answer. Does anyone know for sure?
Right-click the browser to view the source of the page (when the page displays your gmail inbox) it says no.
This page is http://code.google.com/closure/library/
says Google Closure Javascript is the foundation of many Google products, including gmail.
Gmail does not write to GWT or Java.
However, the new Google Groups interface:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!overview
You can find a link from the Google GWT developer to what GWT uses here:

Other notable users are the Chrome Web Store.
gmail is not written to gwt, but Google's inbox, which can replace gmail, uses gwt.
