SSH Key on Dreamhost

Question

I am trying to install an SSH key pair with Dreamhost and my local machine. I use git bash as my terminal (which uses mingw32)

I can ssh [e-mail] and I will be asked to enter my password. I have already created RSA keys on both my local and shared dreamhost server. Here are the steps I follow on my git terminal:

$ scp ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub [e-mail] :~/ $ ssh [e-mail] [e-mail] password: ***** $ (ls shows my local id_rsa.pub in the ~ directory) $ cd ~/.ssh $ ls id_rsa id_rsa.pub key_backup $ cat ./id_rsa.pub >> authorized_keys (i know I could have just copied) $ ls authorized_keys id_rsa id_rsa.pub key_backup vi authorized_keys shows my local pubkey $ chmod go-w ~ $ chmod 700 ~/.ssh $ chmod 600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys 

Then I exit the ssh connection and type ssh [e-mail] into my local shell

and they ask me a password ... what am I doing wrong here?

Do I need to configure ssh-agent? when I do this and try ssh-add, I get "Could not open connection with your authentication agent"

I recently had a similar problem. Check permissions on the server:

• ~ / (entire home directory) 755 or lower for the group and others - this was the reason for me, I had 765
• ~ / .ssh 700
• ~ / .ssh / authorized_keys 600
