How can I add icon overlay in finder?

When we open the Dropbox folder, we can see the icon at the bottom left of the folder.

I am developing an application in which I also want to have the same behavior. If the folder is synchronized, a synchronization icon will be displayed in it, and for another operation, a different icon will be displayed. Marked files / folders when viewed in Finder should be displayed using a custom icon. But when they are selected for preview (using a space), they should show their original icon (for example, a blue icon for a folder, etc.).

Can anyone help me out? Thanks:)

Starting with Yosemite (10.10), there is now an officially supported (and therefore Mac App Store compatible, hopefully) way to display sync status icons in Finder icons as a Finder Sync Extension .

Dropbox developed NSPlugin to display icon icons in each folder / file. As you know, NSPlugins for Finder has been deprecated by Apple starting with Snow Leopard. I think Dropbox worked around it with a hack - supported by plugin support. I don’t think Apple will like it. Apple wants third-party applications to provide only service support, as they don’t want any third-party code to be executed in the Finder process, but the services are not impressive.

This can be achieved by creating a new Finder Sync extension. More information can be found here: fooobar.com/questions/900671 / ...
