EWS. How to get the latest version of SyncState without initial synchronization?

Please note that I have 100,000 messages in a folder. I want to be able to synchronize with the latest changes, but I do not need old messages. Request initial synchronization using

SyncFolderItems(..., null /*syncState*/)? 

will return all 100,000 messages (which I do not need). How can I go directly to the latest SyncState without reading 100,000 objects from the server?

You cannot get around this. You need to iterate over the collection once. After you have processed all existing entries, syncstate should be much smaller than your 143kb.
