Is there an open / free API for public records?

I know that some states provide information on their sites about local property taxes and valuations. But is there a stable API for this type of information? I looked through data.gov, but I could not find public records in my datasets.

"Public records" is a large category, and not all information in this category is available even in electronic form. Of course, there is no single API for accessing all public records, and I would be very surprised if there were any publicly applicable, nationally applicable APIs for accessing data on a specific topic (for example, property taxes).
