Source build versus binary build?

Eclipse has a visual file properties tool for graphically compiling ant build.properties files. He refers to the so-called "binary assemblies" as well as to the "source assemblies". The term assembly source makes sense: you compile sources.

OK, this one was bothersome - apparently, Eclipse allows you to un-compile your CLASS files back to Java files; this is also known as a "binary build" - you literally build bytecode back to the source code.

  • Binary build: compiled sources and files to be packaged into a plugin.
  • Assembly source: selected sources and files that will be packaged without compilation.
