IOS: directly change CMSampleBufferRef?

I get CMSampleBufferRef buffers from AVCaptureSession / AVCaptureVideoDataOutput on iOS 4. Can I change them directly (without conversion)?

I don’t always need a full resolution channel, and I'm looking for performance. SessionPreset switching is too slow because the full AVCaptureSessionPresetHigh buffer is used all the time.
