Using the Android term "drop"?

Android uses the term flinger, for example. Android Surface Flinger library, the purpose of which is to combine various surfaces from different applications into a fully composed image that is displayed on the screen.

But what does the term flinger mean ?

Looking at slides Anatomy - Physiology of Android , the term flinger is used both in the surface Flinger and in Audio Flinger, because a “device” that combines either visual surfaces or audio output from several applications into a common stream that is sent to the hardware. Thus, it seems that the term flinger is not related to the word finger , despite the similarities.

I asked the same question on the Android platform mailing list and got the following answer :

By definition in a dictionary, flipping is someone who throws. In the case of SurfaceFlinger, it visualizes the visual data to the surface, and AudioFlinger transfers the audio data to the appropriate receiver. These are just “cute” words .. :)

A glance at the shot gives the following result (among others):

  • throw, throw or throw with force or violence: throw a stone.

So, I assume that the original term flinger in Surface Flinger is inspired by the maneuverable action performed by the finger / hand when navigating the touch screen. And then maybe it’s just used because it was a sweet word for Audio Flinger too. But these are just my assumptions.

Consider folding back the wallet that tosses paper at your porch. Or a factory worker who grabs items from one conveyor belt and throws them onto another conveyor belt or into boxes or something else.

There are many things in android that everyone writes to the display - and many things that all write to one or more of several audio assignments (speaker, headphone jack, call, etc.), so I think it makes sense an object that casts sound onto a sound target or screen image.
