Sharing a mapped Windows drive

I have a software archiving solution that requires Windows sharing for the client, but I want to actually store the files through samba on the Linux host.

This dependency requires that my Linux file archive has a Windows external interface.

When I map the Linux Samba share on the client as a disk, I cannot β€œshare” it for viewing by the server.

I also tried making a shortcut but no sharing options

Is there a way to create a Windows folder that can be shared and be able to write files to a Samba share?

Yes, you can!

In W2008R2: go to

Server Manager -Roles - Install file services --- Set namespace and replication of the file server and distributed file system (DFS)

Now you can go to the administrative tool - DFS Management - and in the namespace you can add disk sharing on the map

DFS really is the answer.

display network drive. R-click to create a shortcut for this mapped drive.

Open DFS (as indicated above) a new namespace, enter the server name, enter any name for the folder

After creating, copy / move the shortcut to the namespace folder. The default location is c: \ dfsroots \

sweet - thanks.

I don't know why there are negative votes for user3613052. MKLink can do this. It creates a symbolic link to the shared folder, which can then be divided.

MKLink /DD:\newlink \\networkpc\folder Net Share Media=D:\newlink

Then you can access the disk using \\yourpc\newlink

I don’t think you can share a network drive on a Windows machine. Even if that were the case, performance would probably be terrible.

Can't a backup solution on the client use the samba share directly? It should not be different from the share on the Windows machine.

You can use the mklink command to map a network drive to a local folder
