Image Performance Compared to Custom Drawing in UIKit

I have a UITableCell that has several layers of gradient and shadow in it. I am wondering if it will handle this more efficiently with Coreanimation kernels or just use a single background image for a cell?

In general, is it more efficient to use large images (with transparency) over the main animation? What is the best way to check the difference? I assume the Tools will be involved. I am also looking for a good resource for testing iOS performance and best practices. Sorry for a few questions.

In my experience, using images is always faster than drawing by hand.
