What is the “perspective” of Eclipse, and how can I do it?

The documentation and the Eclipse website are still too thick for me, just the Eclipse noob. Can someone explain what a perspective is in terms suitable for non-IDE users and what is associated with creating new perspectives?

So far, I assume that the “perspective” is just a canned window arrangement in Eclipse, and that you can choose one of several options, for example, different stages of the project. But I get the impression that this is something more and more powerful.

You pretty much got it in what you describe. I would add that the “prospects” are laid in a predetermined way, but they should not remain so. You can change the location of the window, add and remove views, etc., And these changes will remain with these perspectives.

So, the idea of perspective is to let you customize a collection of windows and views that works well with your specific workflow and the way you think.

In Eclipse, go to the "Window → Customize Perspective ..." section, and you will see many options for adding / removing things. But not a freak - you can always go back to “Window → Reset Perspective ...” in the Reset layout back to how it was when you first started Eclipse.

You can also save the current settings / layout of the perspective by going to "Window → Save perspective as ..." and save it under an arbitrary name, for example, "Favorite DarenW perspective", or as you like.
