What is the current state of AspectJ?

A new version of AspectJ was released a few weeks ago. But most of the official documentation is really old, dated prior to the merger of AspectWerkz. Books are similarly dated. It is difficult to understand what happened after the merger.

Are AspectJ and ajc language extensions now becoming mandatory? Is a pure Java implementation of AspectWerkz excluded?

AspectWerkz was merged with AspectJ with AspectJ 5. But the current version of AspectJ is 6. So there are lots of books and documentation that covers @AspectJ. For example, AspectJ in action , the second edition covers AspectJ 6, and this is a great book. And here you can find the official documentation official @AspectJ .
