Is there a free / paid location service?

Question

I need to create two drop-down lists for the application. One shows all the countries of the world, and the other is filled with all the cities of the selected country in the first drop-down list. Is there a web service or database providing such information?

You can get a list of all countries and all cities in each country from the free database from MaxMind.com, which is only 33 MB.

Given that you yourself have found the answer to your question, I will give an answer for what you ask in the comment:

Perhaps Boxer Text Editor will do the trick:

Large file capacity

• edit files up to 2 GB
• no theoretical limit on the number of open files
• line length up to 32 thousand characters
• total editing capacity limited only by virtual memory operating system

Geonames has several webservices that basically give you programmatic access to this 800 meter dB.

I used the one that was at http://www.zuzemo.com. It has almost everything you need, countries, regions and cities.
