What is considered the best when hosting your site during maintenance during the upgrade? I ask because I don’t really like to have a site with over 60k indexed pages on google, throwing a 404 heading, actually telling Google that the sites have disappeared. I would rather tell google that the site has gone a few hours, so googlebot should be back in a few hours and not do anything yet.

in the robots.txt file during the upgrade. This tells the bot not to index anything right now. However, be careful that it starts discarding pages in the index. However, I do not think so, but I am not sure.

Use a rewriting system that captures all requests and does 302 "Moved temporarily" to the page of your main site. This is probably the safest bet.
