Android: what does this Paint: DEV_KERN_TEXT_FLAG flag do?

Kerning - typographic technology.

From the docs (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/graphics/Paint.html):

An integer bitmask for the flag, allowing kerning of the device for text.

(or is this not considered informative?)
