Domain Registration API

In my company I have to do a lot of domain registration.

Is there a way to write something in a common web language, for example. Ruby / Python / PHP, which will allow me to buy a domain name from my own web interface? Essentially, I'm looking for an API that will allow me to register domains.

Any ideas?
