An In-A-Way text display animation that mimics Magical Ink Writing in a magic book

I am working on a Cocos2d iPad game that includes a magic book. From time to time a new text appears in the book.

I would like to animate the new text so that the ink magically appears on the page of the book. I tried the following (but I'm not happy with the quality):

  • Out of the game: create text as an image, create a second text image and grease it. At runtime: disappears from a blurry text image to an uneven text image.
  • Runtime: Create random ink dots in the text area, scale the ink dots until you obscure most of the area, and then fade them out, leaving the text behind.

My question is this: what is a creative way to display text that magically appears on an old page of a magic book using Cocos2d on an iPad?

How about creating a particle system (choose one of the examples following with coconuts and set it up) that will move around your book and new text characters will appear under it?

Or it could be a great system to cover the entire text string. Thus, it will appear (particles), then the text will be created under it, and the emitter particles will stop, so the current particles will disappear beautifully.

If you want it to look like it was written in a magical way, you could create the text as an image and have a second image similar to the background image of the book on top, and move it to the right, thereby slowly showing the unoiled text.

If you want a fantasy, remember that fonts are defined as Bezier curves. They can be animated. That way you could create some awesome effects, although coding would probably not be easy.
