Microsoft Excel error: "Failed to send command to program."

I get this error every time I open MS Excel / Word. I tried to uncheck the "Ignore other applications using Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)" checkbox in the "Advanced Settings" section, but still I get this error. Any suggestions?

Removing the Office Compatibility Pack in programs and features, and then a simple reboot fixed the problem.

I am running Office 2013 - Win 7. The un-istalling compatibility package for Windows 2007 and reboot took care of my problem. After rebooting, the .xlsx extension is changed by default in the format of the XML converter to EXCEL. If you need a compatibility package, you can simply change the "Default Program" through the Control Panel associated with the xlsx extension.
