The nav element is a new semantic element. It is intended for navigation or table of contents. Each nav may include other HTML elements, in particular link lists. The nav element is for link blocks, not for individual links mentioned in text content, or for links in the footer area of a section or article.
It replaces the concept of an element with a semantic element, specifically designated as a navigation area.
