Recommendations for deploying data in a user folder

Question

Sometimes, when we release an update for our application, we need to install some files in the application data folder. We want users to be able to move this folder as they wish. But how to deal with this during installation? I was thinking of deploying AppData to a user folder and asked the application to somehow check for new files at startup.

Any tips or links would be greatly appreciated!

We use InnoSetup for the VB6 application, if that matters to your answer.

Generally, the best solution I have found is to allow the user to move the folder from the application.
