What is the difference between IsPreviewxxxxx events and xxxxx events?

For example, the IsPreviewMouseDown and MouseDown events. What is the difference in their behavior, when to use, what and what are the pitfalls in using any of them over the other.

They are commonly used to suppress the processing of the corresponding actual event, especially with parent controls. In this way, they tunnel, giving the parent elements the ability to view or reinterpret the event before it is received by the target element.
