Does jQuery Lazy make a real profit?

jQuery Lazy Loader does the opposite of pre-loading images - this delays the loading of images until they are visible in the browser. This claims that sites feel “faster,” and images elegantly disappear when the user scrolls down the page.

Mashable was known for using this method (although I just checked, and it seems like they no longer do this).

Is there any real profit from using jQuery lazy loader, or does it just make the user perceive that the site loads faster?
