Remove class = "form element" from Drupal forms

Question

Drupal automatically adds <div> and classes around form elements. All form elements will have an attribute class = "form-item". How to override this default behavior?

If you insist on changing it, it is added to the theme_form_element function . You can override it by copying this function to the theme theme.php file and renaming it THEMENAME_form_element (replacing your theme name with "THEMENAME") or phptemplate_form_element and deleting the part that adds the class.
