How to resolve a function name conflict when compiling a kernel module

I am trying to compile a third-party kernel module for RHEL 5.6 and does not work due to function name conflicts with mutex_acquireand mutex_release. This kernel module compiles on RHEL 4.7, so something has changed between kernels 2.6.9 and 2.6.18. Unfortunately, this kernel module is no longer supported by the provider, but I have the source code for mutex.cand mutex.hthat define these functions. Unfortunately, there is an object file nivxi.othat the source code does not apply to, and this object file calls mutex_acquireand mutex_release, therefore, I just cannot just change their names.

As an aside, I initially tried to just change the names a little, and the compilation errors were gone, but when he went to make the .ko kernel module, he complained that he could not find mutex_acquireor mutex_release; supposedly duenivxi.o

How do I get the compiler / linker to use function definitions in my local .c / .h files even though they work with similar functions elsewhere?

The problem will not be in your object file, since macros have a file scope and are replaced by a preprocessor. Thus, after compilation, the macro no longer exists in your file nivxi.o.
