Development of a simple web designer (drag and drop + drag fonts and text / w images)

I have a client who asked me to develop a simple web designer (t-shirt designer ala CustomInk.com) that allows users to drag and drop text and upload images to the canvas.

I have some ideas about getting started with javascript / jQuery, but I wanted to ask SO: what is the most universal way (in terms of browser support, etc.) of developing such an editor?
