Can I capture SMTP traffic on a local network?

A bit of background:

I'm going to get married in June and want to set up an LCD TV at the reception so that people can receive Bluetooth and email the photos that they take with their phone and display them on the TV screen - I have no problem encoding this.

However, after yesterday’s visit to the hotel, I found that their Wi-Fi signal does not stretch to the room in which we will be. I’m thinking about buying a Wi-Fi range extender, but I wondered if I had taken my own Wi-Fi router, is it possible to somehow capture smtp traffic from people's phones? I could take photos right from the letter.

Am I barking the wrong tree?
