Is there a way to prevent the browser from sending a specific cookie?

I store some preference data in cookies. However, I just noticed that this data is sent to the server with every request. Is there any way to prevent this?

A friend knocked over web storage, but that still leaves IE6 / 7 without a solution.

You can set cookies only for HTTP (so browsers will not allow JS to access them), but not vice versa.

Web storage is perfect, but you need to drop cookies for legacy browsers.
