Why are there different versions of Ruby on Rails?

Disclaimer: I'm completely new to Ruby on Rails, but plan to learn it.

This morning I read that two new versions of Ruby On Rails (versions 2.3.11 and 3.0.4) were released.

I don’t understand why people (ROR community) work (support) different versions? What are the benefits for developers?

Active development is not performed on branch 2.x. However, there are many, many, many deployed 2.x applications in the wild, and considering that yesterday's releases were security-related patches, they provided a patch for 2.x users.

Rails 2.x 3.x , , , 2.3.11.
