Why didn't Microsoft turn on SQL Server support in Silverlight?

It really bothers me to rely on WCF to provide Silverlight database support.

My guess is that Silverlight is the client side at the end, and Microsoft wants to provide some kind of primary access / entry point for the data, which is the server code.

Silverlight follows a web paradigm and seems to be trying to bridge the gap between ASP.NET and traditional desktop technologies.

  • This is a somewhat cross platform (Windows (Mobile), Mac)
  • Runtime is a subset of the .NET stack, so it is much smaller
  • Deployment is facilitated by small deployment packages

If you want to use db with silverlight, then check out Jeffrey Richters Sterling DB for silverlight and WP7: http://wintellect.com/powerthreading.aspx

If your talking Sql server, then they made a version of silverlight that supports it. It is called WPF :)
