Why are compiler specifiers called pragmas?

Possible duplicate:
Where did the word "pragma" come from?

I know that commands pragmaare used to pass specific compiler directives to the compiler implementation, but why is the keyword selected pragma? What is its etymology? Most of the language keywords are taken from real words, but pragma, apparently, is defined only in the context of programming.
