Efficient use of Android resources

I am trying to understand how to effectively use the Android resource system, both to provide high-resolution resources and to reduce the size of .apk.

My resource folders:

drawable-normal-mdpi
drawable-normal-hdpi
drawable-large-mdpi

Now, when I use the resources (game), regular-hdpi and large-mdpi are exactly the same. I do not want to include both in my last .apk, because it is going to unnecessarily increase the size. Is there any way around this? I tried using a symlink (linux), but the android tools follow the links and copy the resources.
