Huge sets of mongo. How much RAM do I need and how not to go broke paying for hosting?

So, I have what I call the huge mongo base, which is about 30 GB (about 30 million documents). I tried running mongod on a server shared by another application, and it completely slowed down. Therefore, I have to look for a dedicated server, but I do not know how much RAM I need.

I understand that I probably should have enough RAM to fit all the indexes there. But, if I'm right, it will be about 13 GB of RAM, which makes the price for the server very, very expensive (my application does not make any money yet).

I tried to peek into mongoHQ, but their cheapest dedicated plan is $ 600 a month.

Any ideas? Is it really that expensive to host heavy Mongo databases?

Create your own server and host it instead of renting a server. You have full control over the equipment, higher startup costs, but lower long-term costs. You are also responsible for hardware failures, so stay tuned.
