Can GD make the text distorted (so that it looks like it slightly flows around the curve)?

Question

I place some text above the image using the PHP GD library.

The background image is a ball. Ideally, the text should be slightly distorted to look as if it is on a curved surface. It should be the largest in the middle and at each end a little smaller (the text is not known in advance, but the maximum length is 15 characters).

Is this possible, or do I need to use a better library than GD?

For image effects, I suggest you take a look at Imagick. Although this is possible in GD, you need to write your own mathematical algorithms for such.
